Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Some meetings are remembered for a particular lecture, a distinguished faculty member, or an exceptional surgical demonstration. A few, however, endure because they create a tradition. The Pune Knee Course has been privileged to build such a legacy.

Over the years, the Course has welcomed to Pune some of the most respected names in knee surgery from across the world, alongside an extraordinary national faculty. These distinguished teachers, innovators and thought leaders have generously shared not merely their knowledge, but their experience, their techniques, their controversies and, perhaps most importantly, the lessons learnt from their successes and failures.

Equally important to this legacy have been our delegates. Year after year, more than 1,400 surgeons have travelled to Pune to participate in the Course, creating an atmosphere of learning, questioning and interaction that has become one of its defining characteristics.

From its inception, I have tried to make the Pune Knee Course different.

Rather than being a succession of conventional lectures, I developed a format centred around clinical problems, surgical decision-making, debates, demonstrations, interaction and practical solutions—the questions that confront us when we return to our operating rooms on Monday morning. It has been gratifying to see elements of this approach subsequently reflected in the formats of several educational meetings. I regard this simply as a compliment to an idea that has worked.

Welcome to the KNEEVERSE

For 2027, I take this philosophy a step further.

The theme this year is KNEEVERSE—inspired by the Universe: vast, interconnected, constantly evolving and impossible to understand by looking at any one part in isolation.

And that, increasingly, is how I see the knee.

The universe of knee surgery extends from sports injuries, ligament reconstruction and meniscal preservation to cartilage restoration, alignment and osteotomy; from early arthritis and joint preservation to partial and total knee replacement; and onward to complex reconstruction and revision surgery.

These are not separate worlds. They are interconnected parts of the same KNEEVERSE.

Globally, the practice of knee surgery is increasingly moving away from isolated subspecialty silos. Our patients do not present themselves as an “arthroscopy patient”, an “osteotomy patient”, or an “arthroplasty patient”. They come to us with a knee problem and entrust us with their care—sometimes for decades.

As surgeons and caregivers, our responsibility therefore extends beyond mastering an individual operation. We must understand the entire continuum of care throughout the lifetime of the knee: knowing when to preserve, when to repair, when to reconstruct, when to realign, when to replace—and equally importantly, when not to operate.

I believe that the surgeon of the future must therefore be, first and foremost, a complete knee surgeon.

That is the essence of KNEEVERSE 2027.

Not a meeting about one procedure.
Not a meeting about one subspecialty.
But a meeting about the entire universe of the knee.

A Special Return in 2027

The 2027 Pune Knee Course will also mark a particularly special return.

Following the exceptionally large meeting we organised in Mumbai in 2026 in conjunction with the ISAKOS, we chose not to hold the traditional Pune Knee Course in 2026. We therefore return to Pune in 2027 after a pause—with renewed energy, fresh ideas, an outstanding faculty and, we hope, our most comprehensive scientific and educational programme yet.

There is also one practical request.

The Pune Knee Course has traditionally attracted more than 1,400 participants, and our greatest limitation has often been not enthusiasm but space. In previous editions, registrations have had to close once the venue reached capacity. If you intend to join us for KNEEVERSE 2027, I therefore encourage you to register early and secure your place.

Above all, this is an invitation to return to what has always been at the heart of the Pune Knee Course: its original spirit and its distinctive format—open discussion, honest debate, exceptional teaching, practical surgery and the freedom to question established ideas.
